Abstract

This research aimed to describe the profile of understanding layers of understanding the concept of the function's derivative and folding back college student prospective teachers of mathematics by gender. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach. The data obtained is validated, then the analysis step-by-step reduction, data presentation, categorization, interpretation and inference. The analysis process is guided to the understanding o f the model which hypothesizes Pirie & Kieren owned eight layers understanding students. The results showed that there was no difference between the achievement of a layers of understanding of the subject of women and man. both of them iiave an indicator layers of undcrsianding ie; primiiixe knowing, image making, image having, property noticing, formaiising, obscr\ing and stnicturing, then reaching also the first indicator ( I n 1 ) o f inventising layer, and indicators "ask questions about graphs the third-degree polyiiomia! function" tliat leads to the second indicator (ln2) o f inventising layer. Based on the indicators o f these, both subjects can be put in a category understanding layer ie oida inventising. B i n both subjects disiinc 10 (ten) items the process o f achieving this understanding, including in providing an example o f a polynomial o f fourth degree, woman began with cquaiions. determining the intersections w i t h the A-a.\is or the line y^k, drawing the A'-axis and /-axis, plot the points o f intersection, divide into se\eral internals, then calculate some value functions to perfomi each test point intervals, and then describe the graph. Meanwhile, the man gave an example o f a polynomial o f fourth degree in the f o m i o f images, then detcmiinc Ihe similarities, each interval point test done to test and verify tliat the C O I T C C I graph drawn afterwards. Women made twice folding back ilie form o f "off-topic", and man made that once. Instead o f man performed twice folding back the fonii " w o r k i n g on tlie deeper layers", both subjects do not perform folding back the form "cause discontinuous".
