Abstract
Japan has so many fairy tales that uses animal characters such as cats, rabits, kitsune (foxes) and tanuki (raccoons). In this article, the authors wanted to see cat characterization in three Japanese fairy tales: Neko ga Nezumi wo Oikakeru Wake, Daiku to Mike Neko, and Tsume to Kiba wo Torareta Neko. The characterization of the cats in this three fairy tales are in sync with the character of the cats found in Japanese kotowaza. The result of the study shows that there are three prominent characters from cats. First, when it meets a mouse, the character of the cat appears easy to fool. Second, when cats deal with humans, it appears as smart and understanding. Third, when it’s related to food, cats appear to be greedy
