Abstract

The aim of the study is to find out the types presupposition and the dominant presupposition emerging in the novel literay work. The analysis of presuppositions is stressed on the utterances of the characters in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. This study applies Yule’s theory of presupposition covering six types of presuppositions. Descriptive design is useful in this study since the data analysis needed is to describe data in the form of words, phrases, or sentences dealing with the presupposition found in the novel. The data source of this study is the utterances found ing The Picture of Dorian Gray. The sample taken randomly out of the population is around three chapters in the novel.The result of this study shows that there are many utterances containing types of presupposition which indicate that there are many presuppositions. Presuppositions which emerge in this novel give a deeper knowledge of its context and could help in understanding the story of the novel it self. The analysis conducted indicates that there are the six types of presuppositions as proposed by Yule in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Grayand the most frequent type emerges in this novel is existential presupposition.
